Hints and Tips: The Capping rail is the exterior panel which runs up the windscreen pillar and along the edge of the roof. For countersunk rivets to fix use SJ075W0011 Capping Rail Trim instructions. You may need to remove the windscreen trims. They are usually bonded in with polyurethane adhesive. A sharp blade to cut through as much of the adhesive as possible is the only way to release them. There is an almost 0% chance of removing them without damaging the trims. I would always advise you to have a new set of trims to hand. New trims will need to manipulated to fit the body/screen of each car as they all differ, this is easily achieved with patience and several dry fits before final bonding in place. Remove the trims first but do not refit until after the capping rail trims are finished. Remove door seals. Un-rivet and remove the A pillar triangular finishers at the front edge of the trims if present on your model. These are often also held in place with silicone or double sided tape and are easily removed with a little care. If your model has the bolt in rear windows, take them out. If you model has bonded rear windows, remove the plastic trim around the rear 1/4 window. Again bonded with silicone or double sided tape. Remove the rear ear scoops just behind the 1/4 window. Fixed with nuts from the inside. Look at the B post trims there should be 6 rivets visible. 3 in the front and 3 at the back these should be 2.5 mm rivets. If the rear ones are not visible it may be necessary to cut out the 1/4 glass (be careful these are hard to find if one is damaged) A dodge round this is to cut the B post trim around the glass. Once all removed you should be able to see the rivets holding on the capping rail. These should be 1/8 inch rivets or 3.2mm. These need to be drilled out. The riveted edge is also siliconed down to prevent water ingress. A filler spreader is usually sufficient to release this edge. You can now remove the capping rail. You will now see the remnants of the old trim. This held in place with 1/8th countersunk rivets. Drill these out and remove the trim. Clean and offer up the capping rail without the silver trims. Take note of where the edge is as the new trim will need to be positioned so that this edge can tuck in under the rolled lip of the trim. The new trim will need the profile cutting down so that it fits flat along the roof edge a strong sharp pair of scissors will do this easily enough. (It is not cut down along the glass length that is to be left as is, only along the roof) You will need to cut a small V shaped notch at the point where it needs bend about 3/4 of an inch or so from the windscreen top this will become obvious as it will not bend to shape otherwise. Starting at the bottom edge of the screen and working your way up the A pillar and over the roof you can align the trim and drill and rivet it in place with the countersunk rivets a small squirt of silicone into each hole before the rivet is applied. Cut down the excess trim on the rear end. Put a blob of silicone on the top of each rivet. Apply a bead of silicone to the lower edge of the capping rail making sure to cover the rivet holes. Refit the capping rail ensuring the edge is securely tucked under the rolled edge of the trim. Re rivet in place. Run a bead of silicone around all the edges of the B post trim. Ensure the polystyrene block is fitted to the upper part of the trim and well-sealed as this stops water ingress to the cabin. Re-new the foam in the ears if it is missing or degraded, refit the B post trim and rivet in position. If removed re-bond in the 1/4 window. Refit the trim and the ear. Refit the lower A pillar trim if on your car. Refit the door seal. Now you can dry fit your windscreen trims. If ok a few small blobs of polyurethane every 4-5 inches around the screen is all that is required then fit the trims and wait for the sealer to set. Water test the vehicle for leaks
